Global Insights October: Mohamed Saleh presents Egypt

All students, faculty and staff are invited to attend an upcoming Global Insights presentation featuring Mohamed Saleh, English language and translation major, and Fullbright Teaching Assistant for Arabic in the Department of World Languages and Cultures. Saleh will present Egypt on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2025 at 11:30 a.m-12:50 p.m. in the Rose Room, Brennan Hall 509. Registration is required.

Egypt features the pyramids and the Nile, but there's so much more waiting to be discovered if you know where to look. In the hidden corners of Cairo, stories and secrets from the past and the present, seem to come alive as you walk by. These little wonders reveal the true soul of Egypt, a place you can feel with your heart, not just see with your eyes. - Mohamed Saleh, FLTA

What is your favorite thing to do in Egypt that you will discuss in the presentation?

My favorite thing to do in Egypt is sitting by the Nile at sunset, watching the river flow while listening to Oum Kalthoum's songs. I also love visiting the countryside, walking through the green fields, and enjoying traditional meals outdoors with family and friends. These simple moments bring me joy and remind me of the beauty of everyday life in my country.

What do you miss/enjoy most about being in Egypt?

What I miss most about being in Egypt is the warmth and hospitality of Egyptians and how they care for each other. I also miss being close to my family, my wife and my lovely, beautiful daughter Aline, and spending time together. The food is something I really enjoy, especially Koshri and grilled Kofta at my family house. Being in Egypt always reminds me of who I am and makes me feel completely at home, surrounded by the people, food, and places I love.

Where is your favorite place to visit?

My favorite place to visit is Sharm El-Sheikh. I love the clear blue waters, colorful coral reefs, and the feeling of peace by the sea. The city is lively, yet it has quiet spots where I can relax and enjoy nature. I also enjoy visiting the Egyptian countryside. The green fields, simple villages, and fresh air feel so refreshing. Life there is calm, and I love it. The countryside shows a different, peaceful side of Egypt that makes me feel connected to our land and traditions.

Briefly describe the people and culture. What values or traditions help to shape both?

We, Egyptians, are kind-hearted, welcoming, and full of life. Family is at the heart of everything we do, and we always show deep respect and care for our elders. Our days are filled with laughter, shared meals, celebrations, and rich traditions that bring us together. We love our rich history, from the amazing pyramids to the lively music, dance, and art all around us. Generosity, hospitality, patience, and a sense of humor guide how we connect with others, and festivals like Ramadan, Eid, and weddings fill our lives with joy and togetherness. Above all, we treasure community, love, and finding happiness in the simple moments of life.
