Alumnus John Norton Anderson has made a lasting investment in future generations of students through a $25,000 gift to establish the John Norton Anderson (Class of 1959) Endowed Scholarship at Fairmont State University.
For Dr. Anderson, Fairmont State University, then known as Fairmont State College, was more than the place where he earned his degree - it was the institution that made his career and lifelong commitment to learning possible. The first in his family to graduate from high school, Anderson enrolled at Fairmont State as a commuter student from Mannington. His time as a student provided access to a rigorous education and faculty who believed in his potential.
"Without Fairmont State, I would not have had a career," Dr. Anderson has said.
Early in his academic journey, Anderson quickly learned that while Fairmont State was smaller in size, its expectations were substantial. Faculty demanded excellence, instilling the discipline and confidence that would shape his future. As a chemistry major, he found mentors, including Professor Elizabeth Swiger, who influenced both his academic and professional paths and reinforced the belief that success is earned through effort.
After graduating, Anderson continued his education at the University of Pittsburgh, ultimately earning a Ph.D. His career spanned roles as a polymer chemist, product developer, and leader in friction materials, with professional experiences that took him around the world, including several years working in France. He later completed an executive master's degree in business, further underscoring his belief in lifelong learning.
"Education is everything," Anderson said. "Not just formal education but learning on the job and through experience throughout your life."
That philosophy is reflected in his decision to create an endowed scholarship at Fairmont State. The scholarship will support students who are graduates of North Marion High School and who plan to pursue a degree within the College of Science & Technology.
"Dr. Anderson's generosity reflects a deep understanding of what access to education can make possible," said Marissa Mauro, Interim President of the Fairmont State Foundation. "His investment is not only financial - it is a vote of confidence in our students and in the life-changing power of a Fairmont State education. Because of donors like Dr. Anderson, our students are able to focus on learning, discovery, and growth, knowing that someone believes in their potential."
The scholarship emphasizes science and technology programs, which Anderson views as gateways to opportunity and innovation. He hopes recipients will see Fairmont State not as a final destination, but as a beginning.
"Fairmont State University is a regional driver when it comes to providing accessible education, and Dr. Anderson's story is a powerful reminder of what access to education can achieve," said Fairmont State University President Mike Davis. "This is more than a scholarship - it's an opportunity for students to transform their lives. His generosity ensures that students who share his determination
will have the same chance to begin a journey of learning and discovery. We are deeply grateful for his commitment to opening doors for future generations."
Anderson's commitment to giving back is rooted in gratitude. As a student, his total cost of attending Fairmont State was approximately $500 - an investment that yielded a lifetime of return. He recalls relying on the support of neighbors, mentors, and educators who believed in the importance of education and encouraged him along the way.
Now retired, Dr. Anderson views philanthropy as both a responsibility and an opportunity to honor those who influenced his life, including the neighbor whose encouragement led him to Fairmont State.
For Anderson, the message is simple: education changes lives. Through his generosity, Fairmont State students who need opportunity, access, and belief will have a place to begin - just as he once did.
