Statement Regarding Federal Agents (ICE) Wearing Masks

The Elgin City Council this week took action urging the U.S. Congress and U.S. Senate to enact law prohibiting federal agents-including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)-from wearing face masks.

Because the U.S. Congress and Senate have not passed any law prohibiting ICE or other federal agents from wearing masks, ICE and other federal agents wearing masks may continue being seen in Elgin.

The Elgin Police Department cannot take action against federal agents for wearing masks until a U.S. law prohibiting that action is enacted.

The Elgin Police Department will continue following its established policies and state law that prohibit its police officers from assisting ICE or any other federal agents with civil immigration enforcement.

The city will continue to act within its authority to ensure a safe, welcoming and inclusive community for everyone who calls Elgin home.
