The 15th National Games is set to open, while the 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 9th National Special Olympic Games will follow closely in December. The Observatory has commenced round-the-clock weather monitoring and forecast services for various events since late October, in full support of these two major events.
Over the past year, the Observatory maintained close communications with the National Games Coordination Office (Hong Kong), tailoring specialised meteorological information according to technical requirements of each event, supporting the formulation of contingency plans on adverse weather and establishing communication mechanisms. Relevant arrangements for weather services have been successfully tested during the various test events which were smoothly completed in stages from the end of last year to the middle of this year. The Forecasting Office of the Observatory closely monitors and assesses the change in weather conditions during each event, especially the impact on outdoor events, to facilitate early preparedness for possible weather occurrences (Figure 1).
The Observatory also utilises microclimate stations in the urban area to provide city-scale meteorological observations near different competition venues and route segments, supporting fine-scale weather forecasts for relevant events.

Furthermore, to support the first ever cross-boundary events in the history of the National Games, the Observatory stepped up cooperation between counterparts in the Greater Bay Area, holding multiple specialised working group meetings in the past few months (Figure 2), hammering out detailed arrangements of the meteorological support, jointly formulating the meteorological collaboration plan for cross-boundary events, establishing the 15th National Games joint weather conference mechanism and enhancing meteorological data exchange during the event period, which facilitates joint assessment of potential weather impacts on different competition route segments to support weather-related decision making and ensure the smooth conduct of the events.

At the time of writing, Tropical Cyclone Fung-wong is strengthening gradually over the western North Pacific, and will have a chance of entering the northeastern part of the South China Sea later. The Observatory will closely monitor and assess the latest situation, and provide relevant information in a timely manner. Members of the public please pay attention to the weather information from the Observatory when planning to watch the games.
