As part of the process of granting penitentiary benefits established by law, and in accordance with Article 90, subsection II of the Constitution of the Republic, the decision was made to release 2,010 convicted individuals through a pardon approved by the Cuban government.
This humanitarian and sovereign gesture followed a careful analysis of the nature of the crimes committed, the good behavior maintained in prison, the completion of a significant portion of the sentence, and the health status of those involved.
As a result, those released include young people, women, and adults over the age of 60, as well as individuals who were nearing the end of their early release period in the last semester and the coming year. Foreign nationals and Cuban citizens residing abroad are also among those pardoned.
In compiling the list of those granted pardons, individuals convicted of sexual assault, violent pedophilia, murder, homicide, drug-related offenses, theft and illegal slaughter of livestock, robbery with violence or the use of weapons or involving minors as victims, corruption of minors, crimes against authority, repeat and habitual offenders, and those who had previously been pardoned but committed new offenses were excluded.
This marks the second release of incarcerated individuals this year, taking place in the context of the religious celebrations of Holy Week, which constitutes a common practice within the country's criminal justice system and reflects the humanitarian tradition of the Revolution.
This is the fifth pardon granted by the Cuban government since 2011, benefiting more than 11,000 people in total.
