Washington, D.C. - 5/20/26… Today, Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17) celebrated bipartisan House passage of H.R. 1993, the 25th Anniversary of 9/11 Commemorative Coin Act, legislation to authorize the U.S. Mint to issue a commemorative coin honoring the 25th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks.
The legislation directs surcharge proceeds from the commemorative coin toward the National 9/11 Memorial & Museum in New York City to support its mission of preserving the story of September 11th and honoring the victims, survivors, first responders, and heroes whose lives were forever changed by that day.
Rep. Lawler played a key role in building broad bipartisan support for the legislation, helping secure a significant number of cosponsors required to advance the bill to the House floor for consideration.
"Almost 25 years after September 11th, the pain and impact of that day remain deeply felt throughout New York and across our nation. For New Yorkers, 9/11 is not simply a dark chapter in American history. We lost neighbors, friends, fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters, and so many of our first responders continue to bear the physical and emotional scars of that day," said Congressman Lawler.
Throughout his time in Congress, Congressman Lawler has led efforts to support the 9/11 community. This includes ensuring and expediting payments through the U.S. Victims of State Sponsored Terrorism Fund, working alongside his New York colleagues to secure permanent funding for the World Trade Center Health Program, and working to award a Congressional Gold Medal to Welles Crowther, the "Man in the Red Bandana," a local hero who sacrificed his life while saving others in the South Tower on September 11th.
Lawler has also consistently advocated for continued support for victims, survivors, and first responders who continue to face health challenges tied to their exposure at Ground Zero, while working to ensure future generations understand the significance and lessons of that day.
Congressman Lawler is one of the most bipartisan members of Congress and represents New York's 17th Congressional District, which is just north of New York City and contains all or parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties. He was rated the most effective freshman lawmaker in the 118th Congress, 8th overall, surpassing dozens of committee chairs.
