TAMPA, FL (OCTOBER 5, 2026) - - Tampa Police have charged 74-year-old Alan Barber (white male, 7/29/1952) with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of a woman in her 70s on Saturday, October 3, 2026.

"Violence is not the answer to conflict, and there is never a disagreement that should end with the tragic loss of a life," said Acting Chief Brett Owen . "This man chose to end an argument by using a gun, and he will now face justice for his decision."

The Tampa Police Victim Advocate will work with the family and loved ones of the woman, to help connect them with available resources as they begin to navigate this unimaginable tragedy.

Information gathered during the investigation revealed that Barber and the victim, who had known each other for over two decades, were traveling together in a white Chevrolet pickup truck, with Barber driving and the victim in the passenger seat. Following a disagreement that began at a local restaurant, the argument escalated inside the truck. As the dispute continued, Barber fatally shot the victim before bringing the truck to a stop in a local business parking lot.

Tampa Police Officers responded and secured the scene immediately. Investigators recovered the firearm used in the incident, and the vehicle was impounded as evidence.

Barber was taken into custody without incident on October 3, 2026. He was charged with Murder, and transported to the Orient Road Jail.
