Events highlight Sustainability Month

October is NMU's Campus Sustainability Month, with events scheduled throughout the month, including student club meetings, educational opportunities and the annual Sustainability Summit and Harvest Fest.

Events include:

  • A skillbuilder on honeybee basics at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 5, with a beekeeping basics skillbuilder at 5 p.m. the following Monday in 1315 John X. Jamrich Hall.
  • Learn how to dispose of Starbucks waste properly from 8 - 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6 in the John C. Jamrich Atrium.
  • Weekly meetings of the student group EcoReps from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays in 307 Harden Hall for workshops, lessons, and to hear from community organizations. All are welcome!
  • Weekly talks hosted by the Fisheries and Wildlife Association from 6 - 7 p.m. on Wednesdays, in which professionals in fisheries, wildlife, or a related field, to hold workshops. All are welcome to join at any time!
  • Weekly workdays in the Hope House from 5 - 8 p.m. on Thursdays, growing food to be used on campus.
  • A Science on Tap event at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at Blackrocks Brewery about mosquito monitoring with Ken Luzynski from Saginaw Valley State University's Biology Department.

The month rounds out its sustainability focus with the Sustainability Hub for Innovation and Environment's annual Sustainability Summit, taking place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23. The summit will include a panel of student sustainability leaders, a Climate at Noon talk with Professor Aaron Chesler and more. Harvest Festival will follow from 4 to 7:30 p.m.at the NMU Hoop House, with Hoop House tours, yard games and pumpkin painting. All are welcome, no registration required.
