Scott's Statement on Trump v. Slaughter

WASHINGTON - House Education and Workforce Committee Ranking Member Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement after the Supreme Court upheld President Trump's firing of Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Commissioner Rebecca Slaughter.

"Once again, the Roberts-led majority in the Supreme Court has abandoned decades of precedent and weakened Congress' authority to create independent agencies that are accountable to the American people, including America's workforce.

"Workers across the country rely on independent agencies such as the National Labor Relations Board and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to protect their rights and ensure the law of the land is enforced fairly and without political influence. Today's decision undermines this independence and creates a pathway for politics to interfere with agencies' stated purpose.

"Workers and the American people deserve agencies that serve the public interest-not the interest of President Trump and his wealthy cronies."

Background: On February 13, 2025, Ranking Member Scott, House Committee on the Judiciary Ranking Member Jamie Raskin, and House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Late-Ranking Member Gerald E. ConnollydemandedPresident Trump reverse his firing of National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) Member Gwynne Wilcox and provide information related to the decision to violate federal law.

On April 10, 2025, Ranking Member Scott, along with House and Senate Democratic leaders, filed an amicus brief opposing President Donald Trump's attempts to fire members of the NLRB and the Merit Systems Protection Board.
