SECU’s Janelle Burgoyne Named a 2026 Woman Who Means Business

SECU, Maryland's largest state-chartered credit union, has announced that Janelle Burgoyne, Executive Vice President and Chief Governance Officer, has been named to the Baltimore Business Journal's 2026 Women Who Mean Business list.

The BBJ's Women Who Mean Business recognizes women who are shaping the Greater Baltimore business community through leadership, innovation, and impact on their industries and the region. Burgoyne was recognized for her more than 20 years of executive experience in risk and governance, and for the community leadership she has brought to her role as President of the SECU MD Foundation.

"She's built a career on strengthening the institutions she's part of, and she's done exactly that here, both in how she leads her team and in how she shows up for our members and our communities."

As Executive Vice President and Chief Governance Officer, Burgoyne is responsible for aligning SECU's corporate strategy with regulatory expectations and risk appetite, managing relationships with federal and state regulators, and overseeing the credit union's executive governance frameworks and strategic planning processes. Prior to joining SECU in 2021, she held senior-level roles at USAA, Capital One, and the global consulting firm Deloitte & Touche, where she built and enhanced risk management infrastructure across large financial institutions and government organizations.

Over her five-year tenure at SECU, Burgoyne has applied that experience to redefine and strengthen the credit union's enterprise-wide governance model, shepherding the organization through its newest era of digital transformation and improving relationships with federal and state regulators.

Since 2025, Burgoyne has also served as President of the SECU MD Foundation, which oversees more than $1 million in active, multi-year legacy commitments and works to build stronger Maryland communities by empowering individuals to achieve personal and financial wellness. Under her leadership, the Foundation has granted more than $1.1 million in scholarships, supported hundreds of students and educators through financial wellness programs across the state, and grown its annual Kindness Campaign to more than one million acts of community service and goodwill in a single month.

Beyond her work at SECU, Burgoyne volunteers with the Notre Dame Legal Aid Clinic, the American Heart Association, and the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland. A California native, she has made the Baltimore region her home since graduating from Virginia Tech and later earning her Juris Doctor from the University of Notre Dame. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family and four children, as well as yoga, gardening, and traveling.

Burgoyne was celebrated alongside this year's honorees at the BBJ's Women Who Mean Business on Tuesday, August 11 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Baltimore.
