USA: A photojournalist killed in helicopter crash

On 16 September, an NBC4 helicopter crashed in the Chatsworth neighbourhood of Los Angeles, killing three people, including photojournalist Eliana Moreno and the pilot, George Marciniw. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the crash, while urging media organisations and authorities to ensure the safety of journalists covering breaking news.

NBC4 photojournalist Eliana Moreno was covering the deadly Metro bus crash from the sky when the helicopter crashed just a few blocks away between two commercial buildings, killing the journalist and her pilot, George Marciniw. The third victim, a pedestrian present in the parking lot, was identified as Edy Gutierrez Mejiam, a young tourist from Guatemala who was fatally struck by the helicopter when it crashed.

In a statement, NBC4 paid tribute to Moreno, describing her as "a wonderful human being" and praising her professionalism.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are expected to investigate the crash in order to establish what happened. The investigation could take up to 18 months.

IFJ General Secretary Anthony Bellanger said: "We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of aerial journalist Eliana Moreno and her pilot in this helicopter crash. We extend our sincere condolences to their families, friends and colleagues. Authorities must launch an immediate, independent and transparent investigation to establish the circumstances of this tragic accident. We call on media organisations to ensure that journalists and other media workers enjoy the necessary safety measures and protections when covering breaking news from the air or on the ground.
