September is National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month, a nationwide campaign led by FEMA's Ready Campaign to encourage individuals, families, and communities to prepare for emergencies and disasters. Since 2004, the campaign has helped residents take simple steps that can make a significant difference when unexpected events occur.

This year's theme is "Americans Stand Ready."

Kansas City encourages residents to take steps to improve their preparedness and stay informed during emergencies. Residents are encouraged to enroll in AlertKC, the City's emergency text and notification system that delivers weather warnings, safety alerts, and community messages directly to mobile devices.

Residents can strengthen their preparedness by taking the following actions:

• Make a Plan
  Create a plan to help keep you and your family safe during an emergency. Include emergency contact information, meeting locations, medical needs, and other important details.
• Build a Kit
  Assemble an emergency kit with essential supplies your household may need to remain safe and comfortable during a disaster or unexpected event.
• Support Your Community
  Prepared communities are stronger communities. Consider volunteering, learning first aid and CPR, or completing emergency preparedness training. Residents can take courses through FEMA's Training and Education Program, the American Red Cross, or local emergency management agencies to gain skills that help protect themselves, their families, and their neighbors.
