Līhu‘e Airport Hurricane Lowell Recovery Update

LĪHU'E, Hawai'i - The Hawai'i Department of Transportation (HDOT) is updating travelers on the status of increased security screening wait times at Līhu'e Airport.

The airport has operated on backup generators since Hurricane Lowell knocked out power on Kaua'i on Tuesday. The storm also damaged one of the airport's two backup generators.

To minimize the load on the single generator, the airport has reduced security screening to one line, which has resulted in extended screening times. Even with the backup generator there have been periodic power drops, which require the Transportation Security Administration to reset its system when the power comes back on, causing further delays.

Airline partners are maintaining the number of flights, but are spacing them out to allow passengers more time to get through security. The flights will be spaced out into the night, with no cancellations anticipated at this time.

HDOT continues to work closely with Kaua'i Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC), which has pulled crews from other sites to prioritize restoring power to LIH.
