Kaumālapa‘u Harbor will be ready for operations Sunday, Sept. 13

LĀNAʻI CITY, Hawai'i - The Hawai'i Department of Transportation (HDOT) is reporting progress to restore Kaumālapa'u Harbor on Lāna'i following the impacts of Hurricane Lowell. Clearing of the waterway began with side-scan sonar scans today to identify underwater hazards. On the land side, crews began filling the sinkhole with a combination of geotextile fabric, Kyowa bags, grout and boulders

Work tomorrow will include removal of containers and debris via cranes directed by divers. HDOT is estimating the waterway will be clear and the harbor ready for operations by Sunday, Sept. 13.

Land-side repairs will continue after Kaumālapa'u is reopened. The sinkhole repairs and resurfacing of the pier apron are expected to take seven days. Photos from the work today can be viewed at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/harbors/kaumalapau-pictures/

HDOT is in communication with Young Brothers. The next interisland barge shipment is expected to follow the normal sailing schedule of Wednesday in port and Thursday departure.
