On July 4th, officers arrested a 40-year-old man in connection with a sexual assault in Downtown Berkeley.
On July 4 at about 3 pm, a suspect followed a woman into her apartment building in Downtown Berkeley. The suspect cornered the woman inside of the elevator-where he proceeded to expose himself and grope the woman.
Thankfully the woman was able to escape when the elevator reached a floor with another person on it and she was able to call for help. When officers arrived, the suspect attempted to hide but was later located in a neighboring garage and arrested on suspicion of attempted rape and other related offenses.
On July 7th, the Alameda County District Attorney's Office charged the suspect (Sean Johnson, 40 years old, no address) with PC 220(a)(1)-attempted rape, PC 236-false imprisonment, PC 459-burglary, PC 243.4(e)(1)-sexual battery, as well as several criminal enhancements.
