PRESS RELEASE ON THE SITUATION OF ALBANIAN CITIZENS FOLLOWING THE EARTHQUAKE IN COLOMBIA

The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs is closely monitoring the situation following the magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck Colombia on 10 August 2026, with its epicentre near San José del Palmar, in western Colombia.

According to the latest reported information, the earthquake has caused 132 fatalities and more than 570 injuries. Search-and-rescue operations and damage assessments are ongoing in the affected areas, while the casualty figures remain subject to further updates.

The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, through the Embassy of the Republic of Albania in Brazil, which is also accredited to Colombia, is in contact with the relevant authorities and is continuously verifying the situation of Albanian citizens present in the country.

At this time, there have been no reports of Albanian citizens who have been killed or injured as a result of the earthquake.

Furthermore, based on the information received to date, no earthquake-related damage has been reported at the penitentiary institutions where Albanian citizens are serving sentences in Colombia or are awaiting extradition proceedings.

The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of the Republic of Albania in Brazil continue their communication with the Colombian authorities and the ongoing verification of information concerning the situation of Albanian citizens.
