UPDATE: Temporary Protected Status for El Salvador

Though a September 9, 2026 termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for El Salvador had been scheduled by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and end to the designation has occurred.

Late on September 9, DHS announced that it has not yet made a final determination regarding the future of El Salvador's TPS designation. The agency posted a notice on its TPS webpage for El Salvador, indicating that TPS beneficiaries continue to retain protection, including work authorization, pending a future announcement.

Approximately 170,000 Salvadoran TPS holders live across the United States, with the largest populations residing in California, Texas, Maryland, New York, and Virginia. An estimated 152,000 are in the U.S. workforce, working across a range of industries including construction, building and grounds maintenance, transportation, manufacturing, and food services.
