EU Military Committee Chair, General Seán Clancy, visits Operation ATALANTA Headquarters in Rota, Spain

Rota, Spain, 17 June 2026 - The Chair of the European Union Military Committee (CEUMC) today visited the Operational Headquarters (OHQ) of EUNAVFOR ATALANTA in Rota, Spain, meeting with Vice Admiral Ignacio Villanueva, Operational Commander, to discuss the mission's critical role in maritime security and counter-piracy operations.

Since its launch in 2008, Operation ATALANTA has been the EU's flagship maritime mission, protecting World Food Programme (WFP) vessels, deterring piracy, and ensuring stability in the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden. Spain, as the host nation and largest contributor, deploys 324 personnel, a frigate, and maritime patrol aircraft, demonstrating its leadership in CSDP operations.

During the visit, CEUMC and Vice Admiral Villanueva reviewed ATALANTA's operational successes, including:

Over 2,500 WFP vessels escorted, ensuring humanitarian aid reaches Somalia.

177 pirates transferred for prosecution, disrupting illegal networks.

16 tonnes of narcotics seized, countering illicit trafficking.

The discussions also addressed current challenges, such as piracy resurgence, shadow fleet monitoring. CEUMC praised ATALANTA's adaptability and professionalism, stating: "This mission exemplifies the EU's ability to project stability beyond its borders. Spain's leadership and the team's dedication are vital to its success."

The visit reaffirmed the EU's commitment to maritime security and the importance of multinational cooperation in addressing global threats.
