Crosswalk safety improvements coming to Cole Harbour Road

The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents of upcoming safety improvements on Cole Harbour Road at the intersection of Perron Drive. The existing marked crosswalks at both locations will be upgraded to pedestrian-activated traffic signals on Monday, June 22.

Once installed, pedestrians crossing Cole Harbour Road will press a button to activate the signal. Traffic on Cole Harbour Road will stop in both directions, and the pedestrian "Walk" signal will turn on, allowing people to cross safely across this busy section of road.

When the pedestrian signal is active, drivers on Cole Harbour Road will face a red light and must stop. Drivers on Perron Drive will continue to follow stop signs before entering Cole Harbour Road. Drivers on Cole Harbour Road must wait for pedestrians to complete their crossing and the traffic signal to turn green before proceeding.

Pedestrian-activated traffic signals were selected for this area due to high traffic volumes and the need for additional protection for pedestrians. The project supports the municipality's Road Safety Strategy, which aims to reduce fatal and injury collisions on municipal roads.
