Detectives Investigating Self-Defense Claim in Sunday's Domestic-Related Fatal Shooting on Southwood Park Place

Homicide detectives are investigating a self-defense claim in Sunday afternoon's domestic-related fatal shooting of Jose Danilo Rodas, 36, inside an apartment on Southwood Park Place.

The man who admits to shooting Rodas, Nathan Hensley, 19, the son of Rodas' wife, has not been charged as the investigation continues. Hensley and his mother have been cooperative with detectives. Both were interviewed at police headquarters.

Detectives were told that Rodas had been physically abusive to his wife in the past, details of which she had shared with her son. This afternoon, Rodas reportedly engaged in a physical argument with his wife in their bedroom, during which she said he grabbed her by the face, placed both hands around her neck and choked her until she almost lost consciousness. Hensley said when he arrived at the apartment, he immediately heard screaming coming from the bedroom, went there, and saw Rodas choking his mother. He said when Rodas saw him, he began coming toward him. Hensley said he drew a pistol and shot Rodas, fearing for his and his mother's safety. His mother called police. Rodas was transported to Vanderbilt where he died. Detectives observed hand marks, bruising and nail lacerations on the neck of Rodas' wife.
