URGENT: Birmingham Leaders Call Emergency Rally as Alabama Faces New Congressional Redistricting Fight
BIRMINGHAM, AL - In response to Governor Kay Ivey calling a special session of the Alabama Legislature to redraw congressional district lines, Birmingham leaders are issuing an urgent call to action-raising serious concerns that the effort could once again prioritize partisan advantage over fair representation for Alabama's citizens.
A rally and press conference will be held Monday, May 4 at 1:00 PM at Kelly Ingram Park - a historic site of the Civil Rights Movement - as community leaders push back against what they describe as a politically driven redistricting process that risks diluting the voting strength of Black Alabamians. This moment comes amid a growing national controversy over redistricting following recent rulings by the Supreme Court of the United States, which have heightened scrutiny over how states draw congressional maps and whether protections under the Voting Rights Act of 1965 are being fully upheld. Across the country, debates have intensified over partisan gerrymandering and the protection of minority voting rights-and Alabama has once again emerged at the center of that fight. Local leaders argue that any new map must comply not only with the law but also with the spirit of fair representation, warning against efforts that could weaken the political voice of historically underrepresented communities. Confirmed participants include:
Doug Jones - Former United States Senator
Members of the State Legislative Delegation
Sheila Tyson - Jefferson County Commissioner
Randall Woodfin - Birmingham Mayor
