Chairwoman Amy Barela responds to the Albuquerque Journal on the Voting Rights Act

IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 30, 2026

Chairwoman Amy Barela responds to the Albuquerque Journal on the Voting Rights Act:

"The U.S. Supreme Court's ruling yesterday was a victory for Voting Rights jurisprudence. The fact is, gerrymandering has been a tool used by Democrats in an unfair manner in order to win elections and keep power, as we saw in 2021 right here in New Mexico.

The congressional maps were redrawn intending to make NM-02 harder for Republicans to win, which the court agreed with. However, in 2023, the court ruled to let it stand because it wasn't deemed "egregious" enough, despite a loss of only 1,351 votes in the 2022 election.

To put this into context, in the 2024 General Election, President Trump received 45.9% of the vote in New Mexico and less than half of registered voters in our state are Democrats - yet Republicans have no representation in Congress. Democrats have used gerrymandering for unfair gain for far too long."
