As a Criminal Justice major, Sadie Krum '18 had plenty of coursework that dealt with law enforcement and the prison system, until a summer internship changed the entire course of her career.

Midway through her college career, Krum's advisor recommended an internship at The Women's Center, INC. of Columbia/Montour Counties, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting individuals affected by domestic violence and sexual assault. Today, she serves as the organization's Director of Human Resources and has become dedicated to introducing current students to a field she once knew little about.

"That internship changed the course of my career," Krum said. "I fell in love with the work and have continued my journey in victim services ever since."

Now that Krum's position involves visiting Commonwealth University campuses as a recruiter, she not only gets to connect with students by raising awareness about the services available to them, but also by highlighting a potential career path. "We want students to know this field exists and that their skills and passions can make a real difference," she said.

Those students tend to make an impression in such a short amount of time, and Krum recognized the quality of their preparation not only as a potential employer, but also as someone who had gone through the program herself. She remembers feeling well-prepared and supported by professors, advisors, and professional experiences such as the Career Connections Expos she now attends as an employer.

"The students are engaged, asked thoughtful questions, and showed genuine passion for their chosen career paths," Krum said. "Attending events [like this] gave me the opportunity to connect with employers and explore different directions for my degree."

One of the most rewarding parts of such a university partnership is that Krum gets to mentor interns who learn so much and find the work so meaningful that they join the staff upon graduation.

"Over the past several years, we've been fortunate to build strong relationships with students who complete their internships with us," Krum shared. "It's been incredible to see their growth and commitment to the field of victim services."

Because of her experience as both a student and an employer, Krum offers a strong endorsement of employer-university partnerships, especially those with Commonwealth University.

"Connecting with students is incredibly important-they are the future of our field," said Krum. "Students gain valuable experience, but we also learn so much from them. Their contributions have truly helped us grow as an organization."

For Krum, returning to campus as an alumna and employer partner isn't just about recruiting-it's about ensuring students discover the same life-changing opportunities that shaped her own career.
