Rep. Eric Bell Issues Statement on National Strike Call by Chicago Mayor and Recent Labor Action by Italian Trade Union CGIL

ATLANTA - State Representative Eric Bell (D-Jonesboro) today issues the following statement regarding a recent call for a national strike by the mayor of Chicago and the recent labor action organized by Italian trade union the Italian General Confederation of Labour (CGIL):

"As a Georgia state representative, I stand in solidarity with working people across this nation and around the world who are raising their voices through organized labor and collective action. The call for a national strike by the mayor of Chicago, alongside the similar action of Italy's largest trade union, Italian General Confederation of Labour (CGIL), reflect a growing global movement demanding fair wages, safe working conditions and dignity for every worker.

"These actions are not merely about economics. They are about justice, equity and the recognition that workers form the backbone of every thriving society. If laborers in Chicago take a stand for better working conditions, they echo the same spirit that has driven generations of movements here in Georgia and across the nation: the belief that progress must include all of us, not just the privileged few.

"Likewise, the CGIL's leadership in Italy demonstrates that solidarity knows no borders. The challenges faced by workers in Europe, including rising costs of living, wage stagnation and the erosion of workers' rights, mirror the struggles of American families striving to make ends meet. Their collective courage reminds us that the fight for economic fairness is both local and global.

"In a time when corporate profits soar while working families struggle, it is essential that elected officials listen to the demands of those who build, teach, drive, serve and sustain our communities. I applaud every worker, union and leader who has chosen to use their voice and power to create a more equitable and just society.

"The message from Chicago to Rome is clear: workers everywhere deserve respect, fair pay and a seat at the table. As a public servant from Georgia, I am proud to stand with them in that fight."
