Streets Department Announces Resurfacing Work on Market Street Between 2nd and 6th Streets in Old City

Daytime temporary closures begin Monday 11/10 for milling work; utility adjustments, paving, and line striping to follow.

PHILADELPHIA - The Streets Department announces temporary street closures along Market Street between 2nd and 6th Streets to conduct resurfacing work.

  • Resurfacing work will occur in multiple phases with temporary closures while crews are working.
  • Starting Monday November 10, 2025, milling work will remove the top layer of existing asphalt.
  • Utility manhole adjustments and asphalt leveling course for grade adjustments will follow.
  • Paving work (weather dependent) is planned for the week of November 17.
  • Anticipated working hours for all phases are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. due to temperature requirements for paving.
  • Temporary full closures of Market Street in Old City will be implemented one block at a time as work progresses.
  • Periodic side street closures will be implemented for work at intersecting streets.
  • The project team will coordinate with businesses for delivery access.

Once the resurfacing work is complete, the current one-way detour will be removed and two-way traffic will return to Market Street. Additional traffic signal and line striping work on the Market Street Old City Improvement Project will continue through spring 2026.
