Concord Hospital Orthopaedics - Laconia Welcomes Two New Providers, Expands Access to Total Joint Replacement Surgery

Orthopaedic surgeon Lucas Mayer, MD, brings specialized hip and knee replacement expertise to the Lakes Region.

Concord Hospital Health System (CHHS) is expanding orthopaedic services in the Lakes Region with the addition of Lucas William Mayer, MD, and Colin J. Cummings, PA-C, to Concord Hospital Orthopaedics - Laconia. Dr. Mayer's arrival brings total joint replacement surgery to the practice, giving patients greater access to specialized hip and knee care closer to home.

The addition of total joint replacement surgery at Concord Hospital Orthopaedics - Laconia represents an important expansion of services for Lakes Region residents experiencing chronic hip and knee pain, arthritis and other conditions that may require surgical intervention.

For patients, having access to a joint replacement specialist locally can help reduce the burden of traveling outside the region for consultations, surgery and follow-up care. It also provides an opportunity to maintain continuity with a care team closer to home throughout treatment and recovery.

"Expanding total joint replacement services in Laconia is an important step in strengthening the orthopaedic care available to our community," said CHHS Administrative Director of Surgical Specialty Practice, Heather Smith. "For patients whose mobility and quality of life are affected by hip or knee conditions, having access to specialized surgical care closer to home can make a meaningful difference. Dr. Mayer brings the advanced training and expertise needed to help us provide that care right here in the Lakes Region."

Dr. Mayer specializes in adult reconstruction and has advanced training in total hip and knee replacement surgery. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Southern California and Los Angeles County Hospital, followed by an adult reconstruction fellowship at Cleveland Clinic, where he received specialized training in joint replacement procedures.

A graduate of Dartmouth's Geisel School of Medicine, Dr. Mayer earned his medical degree with honors and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He also received the Freddie H. Fu Outstanding Medical Student Award in Orthopedics and the Rolf C. Syvertsen Scholar recognition for academic merit and humanitarian excellence.

His clinical and research experience includes total hip and knee replacement, surgical outcomes, joint replacement safety and techniques to improve patient recovery. He has contributed to research published in leading orthopaedic journals, including The Journal of Arthroplasty and The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

Joining Dr. Mayer is Colin J. Cummings, PA-C, a physician assistant with experience caring for patients with complex medical and surgical needs.

Cummings most recently served as a physician assistant in the Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, where he provided critical care, performed procedures and collaborated with physicians, nurses, pharmacists and respiratory therapists to develop and coordinate patient care plans.

He earned his Master of Medical Science from Tufts University School of Medicine's Physician Assistant Program and holds a bachelor's degree from Colby College. His background in acute care and multidisciplinary teamwork will support the delivery of coordinated, patient-centered orthopaedic care at Concord Hospital - Laconia.

Dr. Mayer and Colin J. Cummings, PA-C, join an established team of orthopaedic specialists at Concord Hospital Orthopaedics - Laconia, including fellowship-trained physicians Dr. Hennig in sports medicine, Dr. LeGeyt in hand surgery and Dr. Lieberman in spine surgery. Together, these specialists provide Lakes Region patients with access to a broad range of orthopaedic services, from sports-related injuries and hand conditions to complex spine disorders and joint replacement, close to home.
