LOS ANGELES - Following the release of new video by the Los Angeles Police Department showing the fatal hit-and-run that killed 83-year-old South Los Angeles community leader Akil Saud Batani-Khalfani, known as "Bird," Mayor Karen Bass today announced that the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) has initiated a comprehensive safety assessment near Central Avenue and 69th Street where the collision occurred on September 30.

LADOT began its assessment on October 8 and is conducting a physical survey of the location, along with an analysis of historical traffic and LAPD incident data, to determine what additional safety measures may be needed. The department will evaluate potential improvements once the assessment is complete.

"Bird's death is heartbreaking, and my heart remains with his family and the South Los Angeles community," said Mayor Bass. "LADOT is now reviewing conditions at this location to determine what additional safety measures may be needed. We are committed to taking action to make our streets safer and protect Angelenos."

Investigation and Reward

LAPD continues to investigate the fatal hit-and-run and is seeking the public's help identifying the driver of a dark blue, four-door sedan seen in a newly released video. On October 8, Mayor Bass, Councilmember Curren Price, and LAPD offered a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the identification, apprehension, and conviction of the driver or resolution through a civil compromise under the City's Hit-and-Run Reward Program.

Anyone with information is urged to contact LAPD Central Traffic Division Investigator A. Leon at 213-833-3713 or the division's watch commander at 213-833-3746. Anonymous tips may be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
