KANSAS CITY, Mo. -Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas released the following statement after Missouri voters rejected Proposition A on Tuesday. The measure asked voters to approve or reject the congressional map the Governor introduced at the direction of President Trump in 2025. The voters' "no" vote means that map will not take effect, and the districts adopted in 2022 remain in place for future elections unless lawmakers enact a new map.
"Tonight, Missourians rejected a rigged map and told politicians in Washington and Jefferson City we've had enough," said Mayor Lucas. "The 2025 map was never about Missouri interests. It was drawn for special interests, fixated on adding a Republican seat and eliminating the voice of Kansas Citians. Signature gatherers stopped it; brave judges protected our right to vote on it, and tonight voters finished the job.
"Thank you to the organizers and volunteers who gathered signatures and gave Missourians our right to vote and reject the rigged map, and to every voter who made it to the bottom of a long ballot to defend basic fairness. Tonight, democracy wins. Kansas City wins."
Tuesday's result leaves in place the congressional districts adopted in 2022. The 2025 plan, House Bill 1, would have divided Kansas City among the 4th, 5th and 6th Districts and connected the 5th District to Republican areas in western and central Missouri.
Petitioners submitted more than 300,000 signatures to force the referendum. On Sept. 3, the Missouri Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the map could not take effect unless voters approved it, and the U.S. Supreme Court turned back three attempts to use the map in this year's election.
