KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas released the following statement after Missouri voters approved Amendment 6 on Tuesday. The measure makes the initiative and referendum process a fundamental right and requires at least 80% of both legislative chambers to change or repeal laws enacted by voter initiative.
"When voters want paid sick leave, when voters want a higher minimum wage, when voters want big money out of politics, they should be heard. Amendment 6 ensures that they will be," said Mayor Lucas. "After record-breaking rejections at the ballot box of right-wing causes throughout 2026, Missouri voters have said enough. Let the welfare of the people be the supreme law, not special interests."
Amendment 6 bars the legislature from weakening initiative or referendum powers and requires the same 80% vote to pass laws similar to those rejected by referendum.
In 2024, about 58% of Missouri voters approved Proposition A, which raised the minimum wage and required paid sick leave. In 2025, lawmakers passed and Gov. Mike Kehoe signed House Bill 567, which repealed the paid sick leave requirement and future inflation adjustments to the minimum wage.
