Five miles of SR-201 in Magna to close this weekend

Rio Tinto replacing overhead water pipes

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (Sept. 11, 2025) - The Utah Department of Transportation is urging drivers to plan ahead for a full closure of State Route 201 in Magna this weekend.

SR-201 will be closed between 8400 West and State Route 202 from 2 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, to 10 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 14. This closure will allow Rio Tinto crews to replace overhead water pipes servicing the Kennecott mine.

Drivers should also be aware of upcoming lane closures on Interstate 80 in Parleys Canyon for lane striping.

On Saturday, Sept. 13, I-80 between Exits 131-134 in lower Parleys Canyon will be reduced to one lane. Eastbound will be reduced to one lane from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m., and westbound travel will be reduced to one lane from 10 p.m. to 9 a.m.

Then, on Monday, Sept. 15, the same section of I-80 will be reduced to one lane again, with eastbound travel reduced to one lane from 7 p.m. to 4 a.m. and westbound travel reduced to one lane from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

In addition, drivers should plan for significant delays throughout Big Cottonwood Canyon on the morning of Saturday, September 13. A REVEL marathon will impact travel times and require a pilot car to guide vehicles through both lanes of travel in the canyon.

UDOT reminds drivers that construction schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change. For the latest information on traffic restrictions during construction, visit the UDOT Traffic website or download the UDOT Traffic app for iPhone or Android.
