The Johnson County Department of Health and Environment, students and staff at Rosehill Elementary School and several community partners will celebrate National Walk & Roll to School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 7.
Students and families will gather at 7:30 a.m. at three locations near Rosehill Elementary before making the roughly half-mile trip to school together. Routes will be led by BikeWalkKC staff and trained volunteers.
Participants will learn pedestrian and traffic safety tips, practice skills for safely walking and rolling to school and meet Gus the K9 dog. JCDHE is also providing bicycle helmets to the school for students who need one.
"Active trips to school enable children to incorporate the regular physical activity they need each day while also forming healthy habits that can last a lifetime," said Jill Raiford, JCDHE health educator. "It's inspiring to see how Walk & Roll to School Day events can encourage lasting change. And we're so happy to be part of that effort - and the fun, too!"
The event is the result of a partnership between JCDHE, Rosehill Elementary School, BikeWalkKC, Johnson County Sheriff's Office and Safe Kids Johnson County.
National Walk & Roll to School Day raises awareness about the importance of safe routes to school while encouraging physical activity, building a sense of community and school spirit, and inspiring families to consider walking, biking or rolling for everyday trips.
