CODY, Wyo. - The Bureau of Reclamation will be conducting electrical testing that will impact the lighting system in the tunnel on US Highway 14 in the Shoshone Canyon from October 26 through October 29, 2026.
During the testing period, Reclamation must take its power supply source offline, which will result in temporary loss of the tunnel lighting system owned and maintained by the Wyoming Department of Transportation.
Reclamation has coordinated in advance with WYDOT personnel to ensure awareness of the outage. No lane closures are expected. Travelers are urged to use extreme caution when traveling through the tunnel during this period. Tunnel lighting will remain off for the duration of the scheduled testing.
This temporary outage is necessary to complete required electrical verification and ensure long-term reliability of the regional power system.
This tunnel was constructed to facilitate a more direct, safer route through Shoshone Canyon, replacing earlier, winding alignments that hugged the canyon rim. This road connected the Buffalo Bill Dam and Reservoir area to Yellowstone National Park as part of the "Park-to-Park Highway" network developed in the 1920s.
