On 11 May 2026, H.E. Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with Ms. Busadee Santipitaks, Chief Executive Officer of the Mekong River Commission Secretariat (MRCS CEO), to discuss ways to further enhance cooperation between Thailand and the Mekong River Commission (MRC).
Both sides exchanged views on the role of the MRC in ensuring strategic and impartial water management, particularly in light of the changing geopolitical context, and underscored the importance of promoting the Ayeyawady - Chao Phraya - Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS) as a core pillar of the sub-regional architecture in order to advance issues of priority to the Mekong countries. They discussed the operational direction of the MRC under the MRC Strategic Plan 2026 - 2030, as well as plans for the 5th Mekong River Commission Summit, which Thailand will host. They also exchanged views on key issues, such as water contamination and development projects along the Mekong River.
The MRC is responsible for promoting cooperation and the sustainable management of water and related resources in the Lower Mekong Basin, comprising Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand, and Viet Nam, while China and Myanmar participate as Dialogue Partners.
