European Day of Languages: Team Europe in Addis share cultural diversity in different mother tongues

The EU Ambassadors to African Union, Javier Niño Pérez, and to Ethiopia, Sofie From-Emmesberger, Ambassadors from EU member states and many colleagues from the EU missions based in Addis Ababa share their favourite traditional food, sayings, and songs in their mother tongues. On 26 September, the EU celebrates the richness of its languages and cultures through the European Day of Languages. This year's theme is "Languages open hearts and minds!", reflecting that learning languages harnesses both the emotions and the brain.

To close the celebrations, Team Europe in Addis challenged colleagues and Ethiopian students to try different languages in a speak-dating format at Goethe-Institut Addis Ababa, connecting cultures, sharing stories, and learning together.

This day also highlights the rich mix of languages spoken in Europe - the EU has 24 official languages, but Europe's linguistic landscape is even richer than that. People also speak more than 60 regional and minority languages, plus many brought by migrant communities. The EU actively promotes language learning as it opens doors to new possibilities at any stage of life.
