Parliament, Monday, 27 April 2026 - The Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans and the Joint Standing Committee on Defence will tomorrow embark on a joint oversight visits to key defence industry stakeholders that provide direct services to the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and selected military units.
As part of the oversight programme, the committees will undertake visits to Johannesburg and Durban, during which Members will meet stakeholders, including Denel Aeronautics, which is responsible for the maintenance of various South African Air Force aircraft. The committees will also visit the Air Force Base in Durban, a critical helicopter unit.
The committees will also visit Sandock Austral Shipyards, together with Armscor, to assess progress on the construction of a new South African Navy hydrographic vessel. A key focus of the oversight will be aircraft maintenance, which is essential to the operational readiness of the South African Air Force.
The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans, Mr Dakota Legoete, said, "The visit will enable both committees to engage the Department of Defence and its entities on key performance indicators, including flying hours and sea hours for the SANDF, as well as performance against contractual obligations by Denel and Armscor."

Tuesday, 28 April 2026: Denel Aeronautics, Johannesburg
Wednesday, 29 April 2026: Durban Harbour, Sandock Austral Shipyards and Naval Base Durban
Thursday, 30 April 2026: Air Force Base Durban and Merebank Military Base
