LOS ANGELES - Mayor Karen Bass and Lord Mayor of Brisbane Adrian Schrinner today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the City of Los Angeles and the Brisbane City Council, solidifying a partnership between the host cities of the 2028 and 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The agreement underscores Los Angeles' role as a global leader for hosting major events, innovation, investment, and international collaboration. In addition, Mayor Bass and Lord Mayor Schrinner signed a Letter of Intent to establish a Sister City relationship, reflecting a shared commitment to deepening cooperation across areas such as economic development, sustainability, cultural exchange, and major events. Brisbane will host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
"Los Angeles is not just preparing to host the world in 2028 - we are leading on sustainability, housing, and economic development, setting a standard for how Host Cities can collaborate and innovate together," said Mayor Bass. "This partnership with Brisbane strengthens our international relationships and ensures the Games leave a lasting legacy on our local communities."
"With an incredible Olympic venues plan now locked in and being delivered, the 2032 Games will deliver a sporting legacy that will continue for decades to come," said Adrian Schrinner, Lord Mayor of Brisbane. "Today's historic agreement with Los Angeles builds on that plan, ensuring the benefits of hosting the Games are felt right across our cities and communities and all corners of our economy. Improved transport planning, more business opportunities and being better prepared for natural disasters can all come from building a closer relationship with the next host of the world's biggest sporting event, Los Angeles. This agreement will help ensure Brisbane gets even better not just for the Games, but beyond."
Los Angeles and Brisbane will exchange best practices and strategies in areas including:
Sustainability: advancing environmentally responsible practices, cooperation on addressing the impacts of climate change, and improving urban resilience
Housing: expanding housing opportunities and supporting residents experiencing homelessness
Economic Development: leveraging the Games as trade, tourism, and investment-attraction opportunities
Transportation, Sports, and Community Engagement: sharing insights on mobility, youth sports programs, and Indigenous recognition initiatives to enhance inclusion and accessibility
Culture, Education, and Community Engagement: strengthening cultural exchange, youth initiatives, and multicultural connections
Both agreements highlight Mayor Bass' ongoing commitment to advancing Los Angeles as a global leader and ensuring the city's preparations for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games deliver measurable benefits for residents, workers, and businesses alike. By fostering collaboration with Brisbane, LA is creating a model for international partnerships that extend beyond the Games themselves.
