Fort Collins, CO - Join us Friday, November 14, at The Lincoln Center for a special evening with Sidian Liu, the artist behind of our current exhibit The Conch Girl in Fort Collins (on view through December 19). The evening features an Artist Reception in the Art Gallery from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., and an artist talk from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in The Lincoln Center Columbine Room.
After moving from China to New York City in 2021, artist Sidian Liu began The Conch Girl Project in response to feelings of dislocation and the challenges of building connections in a new place. Since 2022, she has asked strangers to let her use their kitchens-alone. In return, she prepares a meal for them, asking for minimal in-person contact.
This exchange-intimate yet distanced-mirrors the emotional and social barriers newcomers often face. Photos from each kitchen visit, paired with the hosts' responses, are wheat-pasted on New York City construction boards, blending the aesthetics of advertising and public art. These posters-featuring interiors, self-portraits, a QR code, and the question "May I use your kitchen?"-act as both presentation and open call, inviting further participation.
In September 2024, The Conch Girl Project traveled to Fort Collins with the support of the Denis Roussel Fellowship, organized by the Center for Fine Art Photography. This exhibition showcases photos and recipes from that residency.
A limited number of Sidian Liu's zine The Conch Girl's Cookbook: Issue Two, October 2025, Fort Collins will be available free to visitors (first-come-first-serve) during regular open hours on Wednesday and Friday.
The Artist Reception, taking place prior to and during the artist talk, allows for informal conversation and a closer look at the exhibited works. Light refreshments and hors d'oeuvres will be served.
