WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Representative Suhas Subramanyam (VA-10) has introduced the Shedding Light on Algorithms Setting Higher Prices (SLASH Prices) Act that would lower the costs of goods and services. The Congressman recently spoke on the House floor about his bill.
Rep. Subramanyam issued the following statement:
"There are a lot of reasons we are seeing rising costs, but one reason is particularly troubling: surveillance pricing. Businesses will use your information to charge you a higher price for goods they know you need to buy. It's essentially personalized price gouging, and consumers need to know it's happening. My bill will require businesses to disclose the use of surveillance pricing and allow consumers to opt out, in turn lowering costs for everyone."
The SLASH Prices Act would require companies to disclose the use of surveillance pricing in a clear and prominent location that consumers can see. It would also allow consumers to opt-out of surveillance pricing data collection.
The legislation is co-sponsored by Congressman Maggie Goodlander (D-NH).
"At a time when hardworking people across New Hampshire are getting squeezed by sky-high costs, no one should have to worry that a big corporation is profiteering on their personal data just to jack up prices," said Congresswoman Goodlander. "Our SLASH Prices Act is about transparency, fairness, and putting people - not big corporations - back in control."
