State Rep. Haraz N. Ghanbari (R-Perrysburg) issued the following statement Wednesday after Governor Mike DeWine signed legislation activating funding for Ohio's Post-Traumatic Stress Fund Commission for first responders.
"Today marks a historic step forward for Ohio's firefighters, law enforcement officers, paramedics and EMS professionals who carry the invisible wounds of service.
"I was honored to lead the legislative effort to create the mechanism necessary to make this program possible. I am deeply grateful to my colleagues in the Ohio House and Senate who recognized the importance of this issue and supported these efforts without hesitation. Their commitment reflects our shared responsibility to stand behind the men and women who stand watch over our communities.
"Every day, first responders answer the call on what are often the worst days in someone's life. They witness tragedy, loss and trauma that most people will never experience. For far too long, those suffering from duty-related post-traumatic stress injuries were left without the treatment and support they deserved.
"With Governor DeWine's signature, Ohio is delivering on a promise to those who protect our communities. This funding will provide a pathway to treatment, recovery and hope for first responders and their families while helping ensure they can continue serving the communities that depend on them.
"I am grateful to Governor DeWine, the Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio, the Ohio Association of Professional Fire Fighters, legislative leaders and the many first responders who shared their stories and advocated for this important change.
"Supporting those who answer the call has been one of my highest priorities in the General Assembly. Recruiting, training, equipping and sustaining our first responders is essential to public safety, and that includes ensuring they have access to the mental health resources they need when the job takes its toll.
"Today's action will save careers, strengthen families and, most importantly, save lives."
