The Cook Labor Government has committed $400,000 for the Defence Industry Veterans Employment Scheme (DIVES) as part of State Budget 2026-27, to support veterans and their families as they transition from service to skilled civilian careers.
DIVES provides targeted support for former serving members of the Australian Defence Force, recognising the skills they bring to the workforce. The program offers 20 scholarships per year for four years, valued at $5,000 per veteran.
Since its commencement, more than 100 scholarships have been awarded to veterans seeking employment within the Western Australian defence industry.
These scholarships will assist veterans to upskill, cross-skill or obtain essential materials that enhance their employability within the defence industry.
As AUKUS developments progress in WA and investment in the State's continuous shipbuilding capability grows, the DIVES program will play a key role in supporting the skilled workforce required across the State's defence industry.
Comments attributed to Defence Industries Minister Paul Papalia:
"Veterans bring exceptional skills, discipline and experience to the workforce, and programs like DIVES ensure they are supported as they transition into civilian employment.
"This is a win-win. Veterans gain meaningful long-term careers and WA's defence sector gains a workforce with proven capability, leadership and resilience.
"With major defence industry growth underway in Western Australia, these scholarships will help ensure veterans are well-placed to take up the opportunities emerging across the State."
