Work is underway to create new pollinator habitats in several Rochester parks. The project aims to convert about four acres of turf grass into native plant areas that support bees, butterflies and other pollinators.
During the summer and fall crews completed site preparation including turf removal. Over the winter the sites will rest. In spring the contractor will return to see what vegetation remains and prepare the areas for native seed planting.
The project is supported by a grant from the Minnesota Board of Water & Soil Resources (BWSR) through the Trust for Public Land. Once established these native habitats will reduce mowing needs and provide lasting benefits for the environment and community.
