DNC Condemns Governor Braun’s Decision to Call Special Session to Try to Rig Indiana’s Congressional Map Arrow

Today, Indiana Governor Mike Braun announced a special session starting November 3 so that state lawmakers can consider rigging Indiana's congressional map ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Governor Braun's decision comes after Donald Trump called Indiana Republicans to try and strong-arm state lawmakers, and JD Vance met with the same lawmakers multiple times over the past few months.

Donald Trump is pushing redistricting across the country because he is concerned his Big Ugly Bill is so unpopular that it will impact the 2026 midterm elections. In Indiana alone, Trump's budget kicks 290,000 people off their health insurance and puts 12 rural hospitals on the brink of closure.

A reminder: Recent polling shows Americans disapprove of partisan gerrymandering by double-digit margins.

In response to Governor Braun's decision to call a special session, DNC Communications Director Rosemary Boeglin released the following statement:

"Instead of working to end the government shutdown and stop health care premiums from doubling for hundreds of thousands of Hoosiers, Donald Trump is pressuring Indiana Republicans to manipulate the congressional map to his advantage - and now Governor Braun has called a special session. Donald Trump is desperate to rig Indiana's map because he knows Republicans are at risk of losing their majority in the 2026 midterms, given how unpopular their agenda is. In Indiana, Trump's Big Ugly Bill kicks 290,000 families off their health insurance and pushes 12 rural hospitals to the brink of closure. Hoosiers should choose their congressional representatives, not have them hand-picked by D.C. Republican elites."
