NYC PARKS COMPLETES SYNTHETIC TURF INSTALLATION AT ELMHURST PARK

NYC Parks Queens Borough Commissioner Jackie Langsam joined Council Member Robert Holden to celebrate the completion of a synthetic turf field at Elmhurst Park, providing residents with a state-of-the-art playing surface for recreational activities.

"Elmhurst Park is a treasured greenspace for residents in the neighborhood, and the installation of this synthetic turf field enhances the park's recreational offerings," said NYC Parks Queens Borough Commissioner Jacqueline Langsam. "As we join Councilmember Holden in his district to celebrate this newly installed turf, we are thankful for his steadfast support of our agency, and for making Queens Parks a priority during the entire course of his tenure in office."

"Elmhurst Park has been close to my heart long before I took office, and as one of the community leaders who fought to make this space a park, it's gratifying to see continued improvements that benefit local families, kids, and athletes," said Councilmember Robert Holden. "I was proud to work with NYC Parks and our partners across the city to deliver this synthetic turf field and keep investing in the quality public spaces our neighborhoods deserve."

The project, completed by NYC Parks Citywide Services team, included the removal of old, worn turf, followed by the addition of gravel, leveling, and compacting of the base. A shock pad was installed beneath the turf to ensure the field meets safety standards. The final stages of construction replaced the synthetic turf and infill, completing a playing surface that will withstand heavy use and weather conditions.

Elmhurst Park features lush lawns, jogging paths, seating, sculpture, modern comfort stations, safety lighting, and more than 620 trees. The playground, designed for tots and young children, is energy-themed, in keeping with the site's history. At the playground, children can pedal a stationary bike to provide a light effect on a nearby column. In the northeast corner of the park, the Queens Vietnam Veterans Memorial provides a contemplative space that honors those Queens residents who fell during the Vietnam War. This semi-enclosed granite memorial is illuminated at night.
