“Invest in Germany Summit”: Amazon Announces 16 Billion Euro Investment in Germany in 2027

Berlin - Amazon plans to invest more than 16 billion euros in Germany in 2027. The new investments span jobs, technology, and infrastructure. These include the expansion of data centers and AI infrastructure, high-speed satellite internet through Amazon Leo, new logistics projects across the country, and a major new production slate by Prime Video. The company made this announcement on Tuesday at the "Invest in Germany Summit", held by the Federal Government in Berlin. The new investments build on a recently announced milestone: Since 2010, Amazon has invested over 100 billion euros, underscoring Germany as one of Amazon's most important countries worldwide.

"Germany is a hub of innovation and one of the most attractive investment opportunities in Europe. That is why we have invested more than 100 billion euros here since 2010, and why we plan to invest an additional 16 billion euros in 2027. We want German businesses, communities, and creators to have the infrastructure and tools they need to compete and grow," announced David Zapolsky, Chief Global Affairs and Legal Officer at Amazon at the "Invest in Germany Summit".

Katherina Reiche, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, noted: "Amazon's investment is a clear vote of confidence in Germany as a location for the future. High-performance data centers are the foundation of the digital economy. With the data wealth of our industry, we also have the potential to become a global leader in industrial AI. These are exactly the kinds of investments we need: they strengthen Germany's position in international technology competition - and create value and jobs in the process."

Amazon is currently opening a second research lab for robotics and artificial intelligence in Berlin, doubling its research presence in the capital. Amazon's research will further develop intelligent collaboration between people and technology, so that customers receive their orders even faster and more reliably, and employees are supported in the best possible way. The new lab creates highly specialized roles, including Applied Scientists, Robotics Hardware Engineers, Robotics Software Engineers, and Robotics Systems Engineers.

Rocco Bräuniger, Amazon Germany Country Manager, added: "We have already created over 40,000 permanent jobs, built more than 100 sites, and invested more than 100 billion euros in Germany - and we are far from done. Customers expect us to keep innovating, and that is exactly what we will do: with faster logistics, cutting-edge AI, high-speed satellite internet, and German stories that captivate Prime Video audiences around the world."

Investments of 4.8 Billion Euros Planned to Expand AWS Cloud and AI Infrastructure

Germany is among the most innovative countries on the globe, and with its cloud business, Amazon has long been supporting German companies with the technology to innovate and compete. As part of the 16 billion euros investment, the company plans to invest 4.8 billion euros in 2027 to expand its AWS Europe (Frankfurt) Region, continuing to meet customer demand for advanced cloud and AI services. Amazon has created more than 40,000 permanent jobs in Germany, among them are 3,000 AWS employees.

Amazon has invested double-digit billions of euros in its cloud infrastructure since launching the AWS Europe (Frankfurt) Region in October 2014 and the AWS European Sovereign Cloud in Germany, which has been generally available since January 2026.

Stefan Höchbauer, Vice President AWS Global Sales Germany and Europe Central, said: "In a fast-moving world, companies need infrastructure they can rely on - secure, available, and built to help them stay ahead. They need the broadest choice of services to meet their individual needs. That is exactly what AWS offers. We will keep investing so that German innovation keeps thriving. As part of the investments, 4.8 billion euros are planned to expand the AWS Frankfurt Region through 2027."

Since 2023, Amazon and Siemens have been offering German chamber of commerce and industry (IHK)-certified apprenticeships for IT and electronics technicians at Amazon data centers in Hesse and Brandenburg. Amazon and IHK launched Germany's first national cloud certification, the "Cloud Business Expert (IHK)," driving digital skills development across the country through the AWS Tech Alliance and a wide range of training programs. The Alliance has reached more than 20,000 students in Germany since December 2023. This year, Amazon also announced "Kiro for Students", giving millions of students at 132 universities across 18 countries - including Germany - a full year of free access to Kiro, a professional, agentic AI development environment, so they enter the workforce ready to build with AI from day one.

Internet from Space: Collaboration with the European Space Industry

Amazon Leo is a satellite network in low Earth orbit designed to provide fast, reliable internet to households, schools, hospitals, businesses, and government agencies in areas that existing networks don't reach - including across Germany. Amazon Leo has secured 24 rocket launches with the European launch provider Arianespace.

The economic research institute Oxford Economics projects that Amazon Leo's second-largest economic impact in Europe will be felt in Germany - home to several ArianeGroup sites as well as MT Aerospace, one of ArianeGroup's most important suppliers.

Expansion of Logistics Across Germany

Amazon is expanding its logistics footprint in Germany, investing in modern technologies across its locations, including robotics, that drive ergonomic working conditions for employees and even faster, more reliable service for customers. The comprehensive modernization of existing fulfillment centers in Bad Hersfeld (Hesse), Dortmund, and Werne (both North Rhine-Westphalia) will be completed in 2027, while modernization work in Koblenz (Rhineland-Palatinate), Pforzheim (Baden-Württemberg), and Rheinberg (North Rhine-Westphalia) will continue through 2028. Amazon opened a fulfillment center in Zweibrücken (Rhineland-Palatinate), which is already creating jobs. And a new fulfillment center is being built in Könnern (Saxony-Anhalt). These already announced logistics projects account for more than 3,000 new jobs in Germany.

Amazon offers access to logistics careers regardless of prior qualifications, with full-time employees reaching an average annual gross salary of 41,600 euros after two years in addition to benefits, including up to 4,500 euros for professional development.

New Prime Video Productions in Germany

Beyond infrastructure investments, Amazon is also strengthening Germany as a creative hub. Amazon has produced more than 65 local titles in Germany, working with leading German production companies including UFA, Constantin Film, and Bavaria Film across filming locations from Berlin to Munich. Prime Video has announced the new movies Der erste letzte Tag (The First Last Day) based on a novel by Sebastian Fitzek and Drive - The Pretenders starring Lisa-Marie Koroll and Amin Bahmeed, as well as the show highlight Holey Moley - Minigolf Extreme hosted by Johannes B. Kerner, Ralf Schmitz, and field reporter SelfieSandra, among more than 15 new productions in Germany through the end of 2027. This commitment to local storytelling is reflected on screen: European works account for more than a third of everything customers see on the Prime Video homepage in Germany.

Investing in Sustainability and Communities Across Germany

As Germany's largest corporate purchaser of carbon-free energy, Amazon has enabled carbon-free energy projects across Germany with a combined capacity of more than 1.3 GW, including wind farm projects in the North and Baltic Seas. Once fully operational, these projects are expected to generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of more than 1.8 million German households annually.

Sustainability is equally central to Amazon's data center operations. The company is building the world's most sustainable cloud infrastructure - combining industry-leading energy and water efficiency, circular economy practices, and AI-powered innovation - to help customers decarbonize while advancing Amazon's Climate Pledge goal to achieve net-zero carbon by 2040. Roughly 95 percent of the time, Amazon's data centers in Germany use free air cooling with no water involved. When evaporative cooling is needed on the warmest days, all planned data centers in Germany will use harvested rainwater to minimize demands on community water resources and reduce potential stormwater runoff.

Amazon is committed to being water positive by 2030 - returning more water to communities than it uses across its data center operations - and is already 75 percent of the way there. As part of this commitment, the company is supporting two water projects in Frankfurt and recently announced a third water replenishment project with NABU (Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union) starting in fall 2026 to enable additional water protection and biodiversity in the Vogelsberg region.

In its data center locations, Amazon's community engagement program "InCommunities" drives local impact across four pillars: STEM Education, Local Skills Development, Sustainability, and Hyperlocal Social Impact. Key initiatives include coding workshops with TecHeroes, the first German Think Big Space in Kelsterbach, a Girls' Tech Day, and a pioneering EnergyCloud project converting surplus renewable energy into free heating for families in the Frankfurt Region. Amazon's Berlin headquarters hosts the KiezLab, which has provided 1,400 square meters of free community space since it opened and offers free educational programs and workshops to 125 nonprofit organizations. The "Goods for Good" program has allowed social organizations to order free products, with more than 200 partners expected by the end of 2026.

Amazon's European Disaster Relief Hub in Leipzig enables the company to deliver relief supplies for free across Europe within 72 hours - most recently providing support for the French wildfires in the summer of 2026.
