From Local Stories to Global Hits: Celebrating 10 Years of Asian Stories Without Borders

Ten years ago, the question was whether stories from Asia Pacific could travel. Today, audiences around the world are answering that question every week: titles from APAC now make up more than half of Netflix's weekly Global Top 10 non-English title lists, up from around 30% in 2021. Since 2019, viewing hours of APAC content on Netflix have quadrupled.

When Netflix became available in more than 190 countries in 2016, we knew that being truly global meant being deeply local. And this has only been possible thanks to the partnership with creators and creative communities who understand the cultures, languages and places their stories come from.

Since 2020, Netflix has worked with more than 300 production companies in APAC. From 2016 to 2025, our productions have spanned more than 650 locations across the region, each one shaped by local talent, businesses and communities.

Across Asia Pacific, stories grounded in specific cultures and traditions are finding fans everywhere:

  • Japanese anime is watched by more than half of Netflix members globally

  • Films from Thailand and Indonesia have reached #1 on Netflix's Global Top 10 non-English title lists

  • Chinese-language content continues to gain momentum with titles like Pursuit of Jade

  • And Indian films have appeared in Netflix's Global Top 10 every week since the beginning of 2024 - a reflection of the country's creative excellence and deep passion for film.

Netflix did not invent storytelling in this region. But we are privileged to amplify it on the global stage.

The first ten years proved what's possible when local stories are backed with belief, care and consistent investment. The next ten are about what's next.

The future of global entertainment won't simply include APAC. It will be shaped by the writers, directors, crews, and partners across the region who are undoubtedly imagining the next great global story right now.
