Lt. Governor David Wasinger Joins U.S. Department of Education to Highlight Civic Education and Missouri's Rich History

JEFFERSON CITY, MO - This week, Lieutenant Governor David Wasinger joined officials from the U.S. Department of Education and state education leaders to emphasize the critical importance of civics and history education during the "History Rocks" event series. The event, part of a multi-state initiative, highlights the collaborative effort to ensure Missouri students have a deep understanding of our nation's founding principles and the civic responsibilities that sustain our democracy.

"Understanding our history is not just about looking backward; it is about preparing our young people to lead Missouri and our nation into the future," said Lieutenant Governor David Wasinger. "By prioritizing robust civics education, we are giving our students the tools to be informed, engaged, and patriotic citizens. It was an honor to showcase the incredible work being done in Missouri classrooms to make history come alive."

The event featured interactive demonstrations and discussions focused on the "History Rocks" curriculum, which integrates primary source materials and local Missouri history into the broader American narrative. Federal officials praised Missouri's commitment to academic excellence and its proactive approach to strengthening the civic pipeline.

In a RELEASE, U.S. Department of Education Deputy Assistant Secretary for Planning, Evaluation and Policy Development Marianna Davidovich said, "Missouri has long played a pivotal role in our nation's story, serving as a gateway for westward expansion and a meeting point of diverse American experiences. As we approach our nation's 250th anniversary, History Rocks! gives students the opportunity to connect what they learn in the classroom to the broader American story and better understand how those lessons inform the future."

This initiative aligns with Lieutenant Governor Wasinger's ongoing efforts to promote Missouri's heritage. Earlier this year, the Lieutenant Governor launched a statewide student essay contest to celebrate America's upcoming 250th anniversary, encouraging Missouri's youth to reflect on the endurance of the American Dream.

"We want our students to be proud of where they come from and confident in their ability to contribute to our society," Wasinger continued. "Events like 'History Rocks' remind us that when we invest in a high-quality education that respects our past, we are securing a stronger, more united Missouri for the next generation."
