Statement from the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States on the Situation in Guatemala

October 26, 2025

The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) is closely following recent developments in Guatemala and remains attentive to their possible implications for the country's democratic and institutional framework.

The General Secretariat reaffirms the importance of preserving the functioning of democratic institutions in accordance with the Constitution and the rule of law, as well as respecting the will of the Guatemalan people, who in the 2023 general elections - conducted with full legitimacy according to the observation mission carried out by the OAS - elected Bernardo Arévalo as their constitutional president. The General Secretariat trusts that all actors will contribute to maintaining stability and institutional dialogue.

The General Secretariat remains in communication with national and international counterparts and reiterates its readiness to continue accompanying Guatemala in its efforts to strengthen democracy and uphold constitutional order.
