FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 10, 2025
St. Helens, Ore. - St. Helens Public Library will host local author Tom Myers for a Birding for Kids program on Saturday, November 8, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is intended for youth ages 6-12 and their families. Myers will give a presentation about birds of the Pacific Northwest, followed by a drawing activity.
Myers' first book, "Birds of the Pacific Northwest for Kids" (a Timber Press field guide), comes out on October 14. This fun and fact-filled guide helps young readers learn about and love the region's most interesting bird species. Featuring over 300 birds that can be spotted in the Pacific Northwest, the guide is targeted toward young naturalists and is brimming with accessible science and keys to identifying birds. It also highlights interesting, unusual, and entertaining facts about birds.
Myers is an elementary school teacher and birder who hails from Warren. He began birding in 2017 after he bought a kayak and started noticing birds while he paddled. Since then, he finds and photographs birds whenever possible. When he's not teaching or birding, Myers stays busy reading, beekeeping, and baking. His bird photography and links to his "Bird of the Week" videos can be found on his website, www.birdertom.com . His favorite bird is the Short-eared Owl.
Myers is known for his Bird of the Week posts on his Instagram and YouTube where you can follow him at teachertombirds and on TikTok at birdoftheweek. He has amassed over 245,000 followers on TikTok and almost 30,000 on Instagram where he shares fun facts about birds in a way that is engaging and easy for young people to understand.
Myers' program with the St. Helens Public Library will be hosted in the Columbia Center auditorium at 375 S. 18th Street, St. Helens. There is no pre-registration requirement. This is a free community event. You do not need a library card to attend.
