Pilot Program Aims to Make Downtown Greensboro More Vibrant and Reduce Noise Pollution

The City of Greensboro will launch the "South Elm Pedestrian Plaza" pilot program for downtown in early August. This new initiative is designed to reimagine the downtown experience, transforming Elm Street into a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly social district that celebrates community.

"We are incredibly excited to bring this vision to life," said City Manager Trey Davis. "This is about more than just closing a street. It's about opening up new possibilities for how we live, work, and play together in the heart of Greensboro. We want to build a more vibrant city center."

Starting Friday, August 7, Elm Street-stretching from Market Street to February One Place and from Washington Street to Bain Street -will be closed to vehicular traffic every weekend from 5 p.m. Friday through 5 p.m. Sunday. All cross streets will remain open.

This program invites residents and visitors alike to stroll, relax, and explore downtown, including a wide variety of entertainment programming from live music and art to fitness classes and games for all ages.

A New Way to Experience Downtown

In addition, the 200 block of Elm Street spanning from February One Place to Washington Street will be continuously closed to vehicular traffic from Monday, August 3, through Sunday, November 1, and become a dedicated space that serves as a vibrant center for community activity, dining, fellowship and programmed entertainment.

The City will provide additional street seating, creating the space to enjoy a meal from a local restaurant and meet up with friends in a street festival atmosphere. There will be games for all ages, live music, and art. In addition, upgrades to lighting and décor will enhance the experience. This concept springs from the GSO35 initiative, a 10-year strategic plan to transform and revitalize Downtown Greensboro.

Free Parking and Trolley Service

With all cross streets open, people can still access every block with ease. The Greene Street and February One parking decks will be free all weekend for the first month and the Hopper Trolley will provide another free option to get visitors closer to the action.

Enhanced Public Safety

The Greensboro Police Department is implementing targeted foot patrols in the area to increase officer coverage as well as weekly check-ins with downtown businesses to address concerns and provide updates.

Addressing Noise Issues

By reclaiming these streets for pedestrians, the City aims to reduce traffic noise, lifting up the experience for our businesses and visitors. Noise pollution from traffic has been a persistent concern and this program offers immediate relief for the downtown community.
