Burn ban in effect in unincorporated Clay County

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. -- Clay County is now under a countywide burn ban. Extreme drought conditions will continue for the next several weeks that create a high threat of forest and brush fires.

What does this mean? Absolutely no outdoor burning in unincorporated Clay County (that's anywhere outside the city/town limits of Green Cove Springs, Orange Park, Penney Farms, and Keystone Heights). This means no campfires, no burning yard debris, or any other outdoor burning of any kind.

How long will this be in effect? This ban will remain in place until we get enough rain to relieve the extreme drought conditions we're seeing.

Are there fines if you burn? Yes. If you violate this ban, you will be guilty of a second degree misdemeanor.

Why wasn't one issued prior to now? We received enough rainfall to keep drought conditions from becoming a safety concern. Now those conditions are considered extreme and they're expected to worsen over the next several weeks.

What about large construction burning I see? Permitted burns authorized by the Florida Forest Service are allowed under this ban, and are heavily monitored and secured with appropriate contractor equipment.

Who issues a burn ban? The County Manager, based on a recommendation from the Fire Chief, declares a Local State of Emergency enacting a countywide burn ban.
